The motion/pursuit ratio represents a dynamic geometric model linking these two proximal cues to the ratio of depth to viewing distance. For example, on the ride from Philadelphia to State College there are many mountains, rivers, and tons of traffic. I have noticed that whenever I am on road trips and looking out of the window, objects far from be appear to be moving very slowly, while objects close to me are moving extremely fast. I have also noticed similar things with motion parallax, but in a different context. That is a good point, usually we wouldn’t think twice about the rate at which snow is falling, but now that we have learned about motion parallax it is interesting to see how something as quintessential as snow fall can be applied to topics in psychology. Post navigation Previous post: ← Forgetting and Examples of Attention Deficit Next post: Infantile Amnesia and Memory Implantation → This entry was posted in Perceptual Organization, Uncategorized and tagged motion parallax, perceptual organization on Maby Isabella Ayeras. Have you ever experienced a similar phenomenon? These illusions are so powerful that they could have made me think that the snow actually was falling quickly closer to me, however I don’t believe this would even be possible. Perceptual organization examples such as this are interesting and can help us to understand more about the illusions that our eyes create. Prior to this class, I probably wouldn’t have thought twice about the rate of snowfall. So, when I looked at the snowfall, my perception was that the snow was falling at different speeds everywhere that I focused my attention. Our eyes trick us into thinking that closer objects are moving faster and farther ones slower because with monocular cues such as relative size, interposition/occulsion, aerial perspective, linear perspective, texture gradient, and, of course, motion parallax, our depth perception only uses 1 eye to judge distances. Motion parallax is when objects that are closer to you seem to move at a quicker pace than those farther away from you. This is when I realized that I was observing the monocular cue known as motion parallax that we had learned about a few days prior. However, the speed of snowflakes was not different right next to my window compared to a few feet away. When I looked at the snow closest to my window, it seemed to fall quickly and, at times, almost violently. This was that as I looked at the snow falling closest to the brick wall, several feet away from my window, the snow seemed to fall very peacefully. The speed appeared to change with the wind, so I watched for a minute and noticed something peculiar. Last Thursday, as I was getting ready to head out to my calculus quiz, I looked out the window adjacent to my desk and noticed flurries of snow. ![]() What are the chances we’ll have to wait only an hour to see it? What about two hours? Is there any chance we have to wait three hours? Let’s think through this using the Empirical Rule.įirst, let’s fill in the distribution of #s of minutes it takes the geyser to erupt, according to the Empirical Rule. Let’s assume a standard deviation of 15 minutes, and a normal distribution of times between eruptions. Suppose we are thinking about visiting the famous Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park, and we want to be sure that we catch the geyser erupting, which it does every 90 minutes, on average. Let’s think through some examples to make this more concrete and start seeing how cool and useful this rule is. It’s certainly possible, but the chances are very small. These are very small percentages (0.1%), though, which tells us that there are very rarely any scores this far away from the mean in a normal distribution. Notice that there are some scores indicated in the graph that fall outside of the range of -3σ to 3σ. ![]() This matches up with the “about 99.7%” we have listed in the Empirical Rule percentages above. And if we sum up the four sections in that range of -2σ to 2σ, 13.6% + 34.1% + 34.1% + 13.6%, we indeed get a sum of 95.4%. Next, moving out to two standard deviations away (all the space between -2σ to 2σ on the graph), the Empirical Rule said that should total up to about 95% of all scores. The Empirical Rule tells us we should see that about 68% of all possible scores will fall within 1 standard deviation of the mean (either above it or below it) this matches up with the 34.1% plus 34.1% we see from -σ to σ in the two middle sections on the graph. In this illustration, we’ve got a more detailed breakdown of the same percentages we have listed up above, so let’s talk through how they match up. Each of those sections represent the distance of one population standard deviation (little sigma, σ) away from a population mean, mu (Μ). Here, we’ve got our normal distribution like we’ve seen before, but now we’ve added six equal sections marked off using vertical lines. You will want to remember those values because we’ll see just how useful they are. ![]() The Empirical Rule is also sometimes called the 68-95-99.7 rule, because it provides those percentages noted above. and 99.7% or nearly all scores will fall within 3 standard deviations of the mean.about 95% of all scores will fall within 2 standard deviations of the mean.about 68% of all scores will fall within 1 standard deviation of the mean (that is, within 1 standard deviation above or below the mean). The Empirical Rule tells us that, if we have normally distributed data, then the following will be true: Let’s talk about one of the coolest applications of standard deviation – the Empirical Rule. ![]() 1963 Assumed Presidency upon assassination of President John F.back on his childhood, Lyndon Johnson would recall that poverty was so common. There's a line in the movie, in fact, that kind of sums it all up: Becky (played by Rosie O'Donnell) says something to the effect to Annie that, `You don't want love, you want `movie' love. So begins a romantic odyssey that probably could only happen in the movies, but it makes no difference because in Ephron's capable hands, this story works, and it works beautifully. In the Baltimore area, writer Annie Reed (Ryan) is listening, and touched by the sincerity in Sam's voice, she cajoles an assignment that subsequently takes her to Seattle, where she attempts to hook up with Sam, a man she knows only as a needful, disembodied voice from the radio. Jonah calls her and tells their story, then takes the phone to his dad in the next room, and in deference to his son, Sam consents to talk about his situation on National radio. Marcia Fieldstone (Caroline Aaron), whose job is to help her listeners with their problems. Christmas and New Year's is especially tough on Sam and Jonah, and around this time Jonah happens to tune into a late night talk show featuring Dr. So they head west as far as possible, to Seattle, where Sam remains unable to emerge from the funk of his loss. Maggie was the love of Sam's life, and inconsolable after her passing, he decides the best thing for himself and his son is to move to another city and try for a fresh start. The film begins on a somber note, with the funeral of Maggie Baldwin (Carey Lowell), respectively the wife and mother of Sam Baldwin (Hanks) and his son, Jonah (Ross Malinger). When the love of a lifetime is abruptly taken away, how does one recover? Can one recover? How do you go on when your heart has been removed? All valid questions that are explored and addressed in Nora Ephron's touching and romantic `Sleepless In Seattle,' starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. And once that `perfect' world is created, it's devastating when something upsets the balance, as in the case of this film, the death of a spouse. So it's imperative that individuals find that special niche for themselves, that little piece of the world that becomes their own, where they can live and love and engage in the pursuit of happiness. The casting led to the strong friendship ("Nora loved big and she loved hard") and also opened new doors for O'Donnell professionally.Regardless of how cyberspace has seemingly diminished it's size, the world is still an awfully big place, and it's impossible for any one person to occupy more than a minuscule portion of it at any given time. O'Donnell auditioned and was cast as Annie's editor Becky, who shares Annie's love for romantic movies and the 1957 weeper "An Affair to Remember," - an Ephron favorite and a major "Sleepless" theme. "I credit Jacob with getting me that gig. And we can meet Madonna,' " says O'Donnell. "He keep saying, 'Mom, you have to hire Rosie. That caught the attention of Ephron's then-14-year-old son Jacob. Hanks stars as Sam, a widowed Seattle-based father who bares his soul on national talk radio after his son, Jonah (Ross Malinger), calls in. "Sleepless," which is out with a 25th anniversary Blu-ray edition, is already tear-inspiring for its romantic plot. "It was almost a grieving, goodbye process," she says. Dealing with the heartache, O'Donnell embarked on a tearful movie marathon, watching every Ephron film again, including "Sleepless in Seattle." Following Halley’s breakthrough, a new level of accuracy opened up traveling possibilities for eclipse chasers.īut even after Halley, mistakes were often made. Infamously, during the Revolutionary War, a Harvard Professor named Samuel Williams led a group to enemy lines to observe the total solar eclipse of 1780. While ancient societies including the Babylonians, the Greeks, the Chinese and the Maya had developed the ability to predict solar eclipse patterns, it wasn't until 1715 that astronomer Sir Edmond Halley, employing Isaac Newton's law of gravity, allowed people to predict exactly where eclipses would occur and how long they would last. Five hundred years later, Aveni notes, one intrepid observer even kept a record of his trip traveling from Aleppo to Cairo to time the 1433 solar eclipse. As early as 8 BC, Chinese astrologers were able to start making accurate predictions of total solar eclipses, writes astronomer and scholar Anthony Aveni, and by the 9th century AD, professional eclipse watchers were tasked with recording exact happenings in Baghdad and Cairo. NASA reports that ancient observers took note of solar eclipses at least as far back as 2500 BC, as evidenced by surviving records from ancient Babylon and China.
